There are sometimes problems with rogue images in the media folder - bad file names or extensions or zero length files. Check for those.
Also, look at the FileSystem - Local plugin. It has a Create Thumbnails setting - it makes 200px wide thumbnails for use in the media manage. It makes it faster when enabled.
